Avs Make Final Roster Cut

0

With the NHL season kicking off tomorrow today was the deadline for clubs to finalize their regular season rosters. The Avs made their final cuts today reassigning one player to Lake Erie and placing three in the injured reserve.

The roster was previously cut to 27 players on October 2nd. I tweeted about it, but haven’t been able to find the time to write anything up. (more…)

With the regular season fast approaching the Avalanche are slimming down its roster and the battle for spots is heating up. Three more players were reassigned today bringing the roster down to 31 athletes.

All three players were reassigned to the Avs AHL affiliate the Lake Erie Monsters. Again, there’s no real surprise here:

D Cameron Gaunce (AHL)
D Jonas Holos (AHL)
C Ryan Stoa (AHL)

The next preseason game is this Wednesday at home against the Los Angeles Kings. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:00pm EST (7:00pm MT).

Following last nights preseason game against the St. Louis Blues it was obvious that more cuts had been made. Soon after the game Greg Mauldin tweeted “See ya Colorado… Hello Cleveland”. I saw this last night, but wanted to wait for an official release from the team before writing about it. (more…)

Avs Make Cuts to Begin Preseason

1

As expected the Colorado Avalanche made their first round of cuts yesterday afternoon prior to their opening preseason game tonight at the Dallas Stars.

The Avalanche only cut six players reducing their preseason roster from 44, which includes four players who are currently injured. There are no surprises here as none were expected to stick around too long following the conclusion of the Burgundy and White game. (more…)

Grahame, Stoa Recalled

1

Goaltender John Grahame and forward Ryan Stoa were recalled by the Colorado Avalanche this morning. This led to a lot of speculation on Twitter that Peter Budaj was going to be moved. I stuck to my gut feeling and insisted that the team would not trade away Budaj because of the role he plays on this team. Many of my followers were having trouble understanding the reasoning behind the recall of Grahame, as was I. That is until Jori from Colorado Avalanche Prospects tweeted about the salary cap and how recalling these two players would put the Avs above the cap floor once again.

This seems to be the most logical explanation for why these two were recalled and I think everyone is looking too much into it. Matt Duchene has been placed on the IR so Stoa could potentially be joining the team, but I doubt that because of the Mark Olver recall earlier in the week.

UPDATE

Brian Elliot has to receive his work visa before he can join the team since he is a Canadian citizen. He won’t be available Saturday which is why John Grahame has been recalled. Brandon Yip missed this morning’s practice which could indicate an injury. This explains why Stoa was recalled.
