Two Surprises & Disappointments

0

Hello Avs fans! It’s been a while since I have written anything because I have been pretty engrossed in my recent infatuation with hockey cards. I’ve neglected this blog since the season began and spending my free time scouring eBay and the Beckett.com message boards for cards to add to my collection. When I wasn’t doing that I was adding cards to Beckett’s trade tool and working on moving cards I don’t want for cards for my collections!

Anyways, since the All-Star break just ended and the Avalanche are getting back on the ice tonight I wanted to take a moment to write about the seasons biggest surprises and disappointments thus far. (more…)

Early Season Thoughts

Hello once again Avs fans. The Avs are returning home tonight after a five game road trip through parts of the eastern United States and Canada, and what a road trip it was. After kicking off the season with a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings at home the Avs managed to win five in a row on the road. (more…)

These teams will meet a total of six times this season and have already met once. In that first meeting Taylor Hall scored a late third period goal to lift the Oilers to a 3-2 victory.

The Avs are coming off a five game home-stand in which they lost their last three. Their latest loss came at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings Monday night. Although the Avs played a great game Detroit still managed to get the upper hand scoring 4 power play goals en route to a 4-3 overtime win.

Who to Watch For

Matt Duchene had a pair of goals against the Wings and now leads the team with 15 this season.

The Oilers are experiencing a bit of a down time of their own coming into tonight’s game having lost four in a row. They began a five game home-stand with a 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres Tuesday night.

Who to Watch For

Ales Hemsky picked up an assist against the Sabres in his first game back form injury. He recorded a goal and two assists in the last game he played prior to being injured.

Injuries

Ryan Whitney (Ankle) DTD
Gilbert Brule (Illness) DTD
Jim Vandermeer (Ankle) IR
Shawn Horcoff (Right MCL) IR

Prediction

This game should be a bit of role reversal for the Avs. After getting spanked by the Wings power play on Monday night, Colorado should have the advantage with special teams tonight. Colorado ranks 4th in the league on the power play while Edmonton ranks 25th. Both teams penalty killing is struggling with the Avs ranked 29th and Edmonton right behind them in last.

If Colorado plays like they did against Detroit, but stays out of the penalty box and actually converts on scoring chances this game will be a blowout. I think the Avs will take it to the Oilers tonight since they know how important these divisional games are. Colorado is going to win it by a score of 5-2.

Final in OT

First Period

Colorado struck first only 3:29 into the period and Milan Hejduk recieved the secondary assist in his first game back after missing the last five with a groin injury. Hejduk fed the puck down low to Tomas Fleischmann who wristed a shot on net. It was stopped by Chris Osgood, but Matt Duchene was positioned right in front of the net and slammed the rebound under Osgood’s skate and into the back of the net.

A little over two minutes later the Wings got on the board to tie the game at one. Jiri Hudler fired a slap shot from the top of the circle that was blocked by a defenseman in front, but Peter Budaj was already down in the butterfly ready for the shot. I think this threw off Budaj’s angle and he wasn’t able to recover in time for Hudler’s second attempt – a wrist shot that beat Budaj short side over his glove.

It didn’t take long for the Avalanche to regain a one goal lead when T.J. Galiardi scored short side on a shot that should have been stopped by Osgood. Adam Foote set up the play by pinching in and forcing a turnover before passing the puck off to David Jones who found Galiardi.

The Red Wings moved to 2-for-2 on the power play after John Michael Liles took a dumb cross checking penalty in the corner. It only took 8 seconds of power play time for the Wings to find the back of the net. The puck slid back to the point after Detroit won the face-off, which was to Budaj’s left. Niklas Kronwall fed the puck over to Niklas Lidstrom who skated it down the side boards looking for someone to pass to. Johan Franzen was open in the circle and Lidstrom hit him with a pass. Franzen turned and ripped a wrist shot that beat Budaj high short side just over his blocker and under the crossbar once again tying the game.

Despite out shooting the Wings 18-6 Colorado still found themselves tied at two heading into intermission.

Second Period

After hitting the post in the first period Matt Hunwick was stopped on a breakaway by Osgood who barely got his left pad on the puck while stacking the pads. This was just the beginning of a magnificent period played by the Wings goalie searching for win number 400.

The Avs dominated all but about five minutes of the period and had a lot of good chances but Osgood made some great saves. The story of the period is definitely Osgood. He kept the Wings in the game and gave them a chance to win. He injured his leg in the first period and after the barrage of 23 second period Avalanche shots he was visibly sore. This period definitely made up for the two soft goals he allowed in the first.

After finally reducing the number of players on the injured reserve list to four, a Kris Draper slap shot hit Kevin Shattenkrik right in the forehead. There was a lot of blood, but he skated off the ice under his own power to most certainly get stitches.

The shots were 23-9 in the second in favor of the Avs giving them a 39-18 advantage for the game, but they still couldn’t find a way to slip one past Ozzie in the second.

Third Period

The Avs got some good news when half way through the period Shattenkirk returned to the bench, but that feeling of joy was short lived when Lidstrom converted for the Wings third power play goal of the game.

Lidstrom gave his team the lead with a power play slap shot from the point that hit the left post before entering the net. It was their third power play goal of the game, and Lidstrom’s third point of the night.

Ten seconds after Kronwall was sent off for tripping Colorado tied the game at three. It’s worth mentioning that a combination of traditions helped lead to this goal. Paul‘s infamous wave and my scoreboard trick both assisted on the game tying goal.

Liles blasted a slapper from the point that was tipped by Paul Stastny before Osgood got a leg on it. The rebound bounced to Osgood’s left where Duchene was waiting. He quickly scooped up the loose puck and lifted it over a sprawling Osgood tying the game and forcing overtime.

Overtime

After the Avs domianted much of the first sixty minutes, it was all Wings in the extra frame. The Wings capitalized on another power play, this time with Jones in the box serving a Budaj tripping penalty. The Wings worked the puck around the zone like they had done all game on the power play and with it being a 4-on-3 they had even more room to work with. Henrik Zetterberg was along the sideboards when he passed it to the top of the cirlce where Kronwall let a one-timer fly that beat Budaj giving his team the 4-3 overtime win.

Box Score

Three Stars

1. Niklas Lidstrom – 1 Goal, 3 Assists
2. Chris Osgood – 46 Saves
3. Matt Duchene – 2 Goals

SubaCool Play of the Game

Despite feeling like I always write about him in this section I am going to do do it again. Matt Duchene’s tying goal gets tonight’s play of the game. It wasn’t that great of a play, but it came at the perfect time and tied the game with only 2:30 left to play.

Analysis

The good news is that the Avs got at least one point out of tonight’s game, the bad news is that they dominated the second period recording 23 shots and zero goals. They had many chances to put the Wings away and end the game right then and there, but they just couldn’t convert. If you take away power play goals for both teams the Avs win this game 2-0, and that’s all I have to say about that. I do give a lot of credit to Osgood who played well not only in that period, but through the entire game. I’m happy to see him join an elite club of goaltenders with 400 wins, but I wish it didn’t come at the hands of the Avs.

This is the third time these teams face-off against each other this season, and the first one being played in Denver. The season series is tied 1-1 with the Avs winning the first meeting back in October 5-4 while the Wings won a month later 3-1. The teams will meet once more on January 10th.

Detroit Red Wings Logo
As has been the story in years past, Detroit continues to dominate the Western Conference with 48 points. The Wings dropped two in a row before the Christmas break, but bounced back to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on Sunday night.

Who to Watch For

Henrik Zetterberg recorded a goal and assist in that game against the Wild and leads the team with 40 points. Todd Bertuzzi has been the Avs nemesis in the first two games of the season series. He leads the series with 4 points (1G, 3A) against the Avs.

After winning six in a row the Avs have now dropped two in a row, including their last game before the break against the same Wild team the Wings just beat Sunday. Despite suffering through injuries to many of their star players the Avs have somehow managed to keep winning games and actually leads the entire league in goals scored.

One question I can’t wait to have answered is who gets the start tonight? Craig Anderson has been playing poorly lately and was pulled in Thursday nights 3-1 loss to the Wild. Peter Budaj came in and didn’t allow a goal and looked strong throughout the game. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Budaj get the start, but knowing Sacco he will stick with Andy.

Who to Watch For

David Jones scored the only goal of the game for the Avs on Thursday night and has 2 goals and an assist so far in the season series against the Wings. Matt Duchene continues to produce for the Avalanche and now leads the team with 34 points.

Cody McLeod (Groin) DTD
Milan Hejduk (Groin) DTD

Prediction

With a few days rest and the Christmas break behind them, and hopefully with Hejduk and McLeod back in the lineup, the Avs are well rested and ready to take on the top team in the Conference. Despite the rivalry having fizzled out over the years as the faces on both teams have changed I still love games against the Red Wings. I have a few Wings fans who love to trash talk when the Wings win and I of course love giving it right back for Avs wins.

I think that tonight I’ll be the one trash talking when the Avs get back on track and win 4-3.

UPDATE

With the holidays I haven’t been paying attention to Twitter and other sources I get Avs news from, but as you can see below another veteran to my Live Game Chats, Emily has some information about tonight’s game. Budaj will be the starter and both McLeod and Hejduk will be in the lineup tonight. Also, Daniel Cleary from the Wings is out at least four weeks after fracturing his ankle.
